The inaugural Skyex Community Day took place at Griffin Park on Sunday 26th May and was deemed a huge success.

Despite heavy rain leading up to the day, the sun was shining and the Griffin Park pitch was in excellent condition as hundreds of parents and children gathered at the ground in preparation for the Youth Team tournament that was to take place before the main event, a match between the Skyex All Stars and a team of Brentford Legends.

DSC_0726There were definitely some all-stars and legends in the making as Greenford’s Celtic FC, Pitshanger FC from Ealing, Sandgate FC from Hayes and Ruislip Rangers battled it out in front of a growing Brentford crowd. There was some genuinely thrilling action on display and a few breath-taking goals too, as well as some tense penalty shoot-outs!

The 8s and 9s tournament was won by Ruislip Rangers, with Sandgate taking the 10s and 11s prize.

Brentford Legends Skyex All StarsNo sooner was the youth tournament over than the stars of the afternoon had taken to the pitch, having been patiently warming-up on the sidelines as the Griffin Park temperature increased along with the size of the gathered crowd.

The Skyex All-Stars squad featured football legends Dave Beasant, Luther Blissett, Paul Furlong, Micah Hyde and Barry Hayles, as well as celebrities including Jeff Brazier, Aiden Callaghan, Ralf Little, Harvey, Ben Shephard, DJ Spoony and Ewan Thomas.

The Brentford FC team included former Bees stars Paul Gibbs, Danny Boxhall, Rob Quinn, Ijah Anderson, Glenn Poole, Ben Burgess, Nathan Elder and David Hunt among others.

The Skyex team raced into a 3-0 lead but the Bees managed to pull it back to 3-2 before half time. A thrilling second half saw a further five goals, with Brentford completing the comeback to win 6-4. Nathan Elder was the Bees hero with four well-taken goals, with Skyex’s Barry Hayles also notching a fine hat-trick despite finishing on the losing side.

With performances from local and international singers, the day was brought to close, with a considerable sum being raised for Bright Sky on the day.
